Amazon drops the seller-performance gate on the Featured Offer

Amazon is removing the seller eligibility check that offers had to clear before they could compete for the Featured Offer, the placement most sellers still call the Buy Box. In its seller forum announcement, Amazon said that starting in July 2026 it would begin removing seller eligibility requirements for the Featured Offer, rolling the change out gradually across all Amazon stores globally and completing by the end of 2026. EU and UK stores were given a July 20 start date, ChannelX reported.

Amazon's stated reasoning was that the screening step had stopped earning its place: the first seller eligibility step is no longer delivering additional value to customers, so the company is removing it. Sellers are told no action is required and existing offers are included automatically. Amazon also repeated the caveat that being considered for the Featured Offer does not guarantee an offer will be featured.

From gate-then-rank to rank-only

The mechanical change is more interesting than the announcement makes it sound. Three metrics previously operated as a pass or fail prerequisite: chargeback rate, order defect rate, and Voice of the Customer complaints. Under the old design, Amazon filtered sellers against those thresholds and then ranked whoever survived. Under the new design those same metrics become direct inputs inside one ranking formula that also weighs price, delivery speed and service quality, as PPC Land described it, moving the system from a gate-then-rank model to a rank-only model.

Nothing is being deleted from the selection criteria. Amazon says it continues to evaluate offers on competitive pricing, delivery speed and performance, and that the criteria used to select the Featured Offer have not changed. What changed is that a failing performance metric no longer removes an offer from contention. It weighs against the offer inside the ranking, where a sufficiently strong price or delivery position can offset it.

What Amazon has not published

The unpublished part is the weighting. Amazon has not disclosed how heavily each metric counts inside the merged formula, which means the practical effect of the change is unknowable from the outside until sellers observe it in their own data. Seller forum responses reflected that, with commenters describing the announcement as vague and questioning whether pricing algorithms will keep suppressing certain sellers regardless of the eligibility change.

The direction of travel is worth noting on its own. Amazon is loosening a performance gate at the same moment other marketplaces are tightening theirs: Walmart raised the bar on marketplace seller performance standards in May and made its late shipment rate an accountable standard at the end of July. The two platforms are making opposite bets about whether a hard performance floor or a weighted ranking produces the better customer outcome.

What changes on your own detail pages

Why it matters: For a seller with clean metrics, the gate was quiet protection. It kept weaker operators out of the auction entirely, and removing it widens the field of offers competing on the same detail page. For a seller carrying a performance problem, this is a route back into contention that did not exist before, provided price and delivery can carry the weight. Either way, the competitive set on a given ASIN can change without anything about that ASIN changing, which makes Buy Box share movements this year harder to read as a signal about your own listing.

What it means for our partners: We are watching Featured Offer share through the rollout window rather than reading short-term movement as a listing problem, since the eligible pool itself is shifting. Price competitiveness and delivery speed carry more of the outcome now that they are no longer gated behind a separate check, which raises the return on getting both right.
